When You're Struggling to Create Consistency Around Your Mindfulness Practice
Apr 08, 2025
Consistency is the ultimate journey of self love and devotion.
And mind you, the first step to creating change in your life is recognizing that you’re not totally happy with the way things are moving! Whether you have struggled with consistency or are ready to create sustainable happiness through consistency in your life, the fact that you are desiring more for yourself... BETTER FOR YOURSELF, is a revelation that I am here to celebrate with you.
→ May you be reminded that to witness and experience change, you are required to BE THE CHANGE.
You are WORTHY of walking through life energized, content and sustainably happy.
Is everyday going to be perfect? No.
Life is a whimsical up, down and sideways experience (but any and all redirection is reconnection with your life path and souls purpose).
Fun fact about me is that I am a gemini sun, hello air sign lol...
Something I have noticed about myself is that I FLOURISH with a routine and FLOURISH when I am consistent with my wellness practices. Something I have also noticed is that I have a tendency to self sabotage and fall off from consistency when I really start to create deep change in my life or when things start to feel a little TOO real.
What does falling off look like? Completely ignoring and stopping my practice. Returning back to default mode and doing the things that are comfortable rather than pushing myself to prioritize my mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health.
This might look like:
- me going on my phone immediately in the morning (this always throws me off)
- me completely skipping my meditation (my mediation is my life line, it grounds my air energy)
- my room gradually becoming more dirty because I haven't stayed up with keeping it organized and tidy everyday (my mind feels cluttered when my room is cluttered)
Point is we are human.
And being human means we all have our own set of limiting beliefs that we learned in early childhood.
A common limiting belief I see within myself and those around me who have struggled with consistency is subconsciously feeling like we are not worthy of investing in ourselves - OR - fearing the magnitude of our success because deep down we know if we continue to show up things are going to get really really expansive (which is terrifying for the ego who wants to stay in the comfort zone).
So here are 5 simple steps you can follow to create a consistent wellness practice:
(revisit these steps every time you fall from consistency or need a reminder you're capable)
1.) Drop the guilt & shame
Shaming yourself for not following through on 100% perfect consistency isn't the cure to creating a consistent wellness routine.
Guilt & shame come from our need for perfection and comparison to others.
Rather than thinking:
- “I should do this.”
- “I need to do this.”
- "I have to do this."
Replace those thoughts with, “I GET TO DO THIS, I GET TO SHOW UP FOR MYSELF.”
This is the time to experiment to find what works and resonates - approach your practice with curiosity.
- Do you like morning practices or evening practices?
- Do you like movement first or meditation first?
- Do you prefer guided meditations or silent meditations?
2.) Get clear on why consistency is important, why are you practicing mindfulness in the first place?
- Why do you practice yoga or write in your journal?
- Why do you meditate or go for morning walks?
- Why bullet gratitude lists?
- Why is showing up for yourself so critical? How does it benefit you?
We work to calm the mind, move the body and celebrate gratitude because it enables us to show up as the best versions of ourselves which innately allows us to show up even better for others.
You are worthy of living an enjoyable life.
3.) Start small
What is ONE bite sized way you can commit to yourself? I'm talking 5 minutes.
Rather than try to convince yourself you can show up to an hour of meditation right off rip, promise 5 minutes to yourself instead.
Start SMALL so as you show up daily, you build your confidence and get that momentum rolling.
4.) Build UP
After a week, increase to 10 minutes of mindfulness.
Perhaps you do 5 minutes of breathing exercises, then 5 minutes of journaling.
Get playful with wellness combinations!
5.) Celebrate EVERYTHING.
Celebrate every small achievement and moment.
Those small choices to show up for yourself will accumulate and grow into a way of BEING.
The small micro moments create the large grand picture.
They are important and worthy of being honored!
